The idea of an institution as a “family”—sharing with the musicians their daily lives and their loved ones—surely is unique among directors of any institution. Virginia Woolf has a memorable line: “Children never forget,” and musicians at Marlboro and their families were encouraged to share values which shaped their memories… the “family” approach created memories of shared value that are life-sustaining.
