Written for and performed by the Busch Little Symphony in their American concerts of the 1940s, the cycle represents a European composer's enthusiastic encounter with an African-American folk idiom and its reception at the time. Some fifty years later, it is performed today to honor the anniversary of the composer's death on August 8, 1891. -
